So, a couple of years ago I decided to open a clothing account, because one must build a credit record, right?? So I went to Edgars and opened the account without thinking twice. A few months down the line I felt Edgars was a bit pricey, so I thought, how about i open a Mr Price account??? Yeah, their clothes are affordable. Off to Mr Price I went. And NO, I didn't close my Edgars account at that point. I kept both.

Both accounts were always maxed out, because I'd buy clothing almost monthly, all the while paying the minimum amount. Fast forward 2013, I decided to get rid of the Edgars account and started paying it off. So I would cut up the card to curb the temptation, pay monthly until a sudden need for new clothing would arise to a point where I'd request a new card, then of course max it out again.

This became a pattern that I repeated over and over again, without ever reaching the goal I wanted to reach.

In late 2016, my then boyfriend (now husband) shared these tips with me. It's really simple, a no-brainer actually.

  1. Cut up the card - (avoid any temptations).

  2. Pay as planned (the minimum amount) or pay more if your budget allows (I paid more).

  3. Every month, call your service provider(in my case it was Edgars) and ask them to reduce your credit limit by the amount you've paid. So, if you've paid R 300, ask them to reduce your credit limit by R 300. This means you'll have no credit available (i.e. buying power) left.

  4. Repeat step 2 and 3 until your account is paid off in full.

  5. Watch as your account balance drops until you reach R 0!!

So, try it out and let me know if it works for you. I am going to follow this same process as I get rid of my credit card, starting this month. Join me and lets kick these debts on their backsides!!!!!
